TVN is not for sale after all

TVN remains within the structures of Warner Bros. Discovery – the television reported in a letter sent to the station’s employees. It was signed by the most important people for the Polish station. There were several contenders for the purchase of the television – and in the final stretch another large media player joined – Ringer Axel Springer.

On Monday, April 14, the TVN team was supposed to receive an email that dispelled doubts about the future of the station. The first to report on the matter was “Gazeta Wyborcza”, which before noon revealed the content of the letter signed by Katarzyna Kieli, president of Warner Bros. Discovery in Poland and president of TVN, as well as Gerhard Zeiler, head of Warner Bros. Discovery International. These are the most important people for the Polish station.

Information about the letter to employees, in which it was stated that “TVN will remain within the structures of Warner Bros. Discovery”, was also reported on Monday morning by the Polish Press Agency.

TVN for sale? The decision has been made

“For the past few months, we have been reviewing strategic options for TVN. One of the options considered was the sale of the company. Such a process is nothing unusual for listed companies such as Warner Bros. Discovery. (…) Today, we would like to inform you that we have completed this stage. We have decided that the optimal option is for TVN to remain within the structures of WBD and develop our business within one group, ” we read in the message.

Speculations about the decision

The decision to keep TVN within WBD’s structures may come as a surprise, especially since it was recently considered for sale. The American owner, Warner Bros. Discovery, is struggling financially, reporting a net loss of $11 billion for 2024. Despite this, streaming, mainly the Max platform, is doing well, which has allowed it to reduce debt.

Among the potential buyers of TVN was billionaire Michał Sołowow, who eventually withdrew from this plan. Ringier Axel Springer Polska with the CVC Capital Partners fund also appeared in the final stretch of the race.

In December 2024, when reports emerged about a possible purchase of TVN by Hungarian capital linked to Victor Orban, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that he would put the station on a list of companies of strategic importance to the state, protecting it from a “dangerous takeover.” Monday’s decision ends speculation about a possible sale of the station.
