Declaration of Media Independence from Editors-in-Chief

TVN24 | 28 June 2023

“We will defend the independence of Polish journalism, and the editorial offices we manage will jointly and consistently inform the public about any attempt by the authorities to influence the media,” the editors and editors-in-chief of dozens of free media wrote in a joint declaration. We publish it in full below.

As editors and editors-in-chief of Poland’s largest media outlets, we stand up for their independence and declare our unquestionable commitment to journalistic values such as objectivity, integrity and journalistic honesty.

We are convinced that it is our fundamental duty to look at the hands of those in power and to provide reliable information based on verified sources, taking care to ensure a diversity of perspectives. Our goal is always to provide a full, balanced presentation of the facts.

In recent days, texts have been published on Onet and Wirtualna Polska revealing attempts by people in power to press for editorial freedom. After numerous cases from the recent past – lex TVN, proceedings of the National Broadcasting Council, mass lawsuits sent to Polish editorial offices – these are further attempts to limit the independence of Polish media.

We declare that we will defend the independence of Polish journalism, and that the editorial offices we manage will jointly and consistently inform the public about every attempt by the authorities to influence the media.

Together we will fight to maintain free and independent media as the foundation of a democratic society, protecting citizens’ right to access reliable information.
