On Wednesday, a debate was held in the US Congress on the rule of law in Poland and Hungary. Congressmen discussed the problems related to the decline in the level of democracy in these countries and their relations with the European Union. – Poland and Hungary are not a torch of democracy and freedom in the world – underlined.

Debate in the USA about Poland and Hungary
One of the first issues discussed in the US Congress debate was the issue of media freedom. Politicians admitted that both countries – Hungary and Poland, should be treated separately, however, in both cases we have interpreted the violations of these principles, including in connection with the recent Lex TVN Act.

Congressmen also noted that there was a slow “collapse of democratic institutions,” with the judiciary as an example. – Poland does not fulfill its promises related to the Disciplinary Chamber. There is an existential challenge for the European Union. Then other countries could follow the example of Poland. This problem has grown a lot, underlined.

It was also noticed that Poland and Hungary have problems with reaching agreement with the European Union, which is already slowly exhausting the means of intervention.

The actions of Poland and Hungary, according to congressmen, “undermine the unity of the European Union” and therefore they should be “put under pressure”. – This is their fight, but we must give support and hope to the civic community in Poland. We have to support journalists – emphasized one of the congresswoman.

It was admitted that Poland is an important ally of the USA. However, Congress should look at what the authorities in our country are doing and “tell the harsh truth”. It was also suggested that “Hungarian tendencies” are also being translated into other countries, and that “what Orban is doing” unfortunately influences what is happening in Poland.

As for Hungary itself, the issue of nationalization of this country was emphasized and fears were expressed that the next elections may not be conducted fairly. – Orban’s actions mean treating Hungarian history as a weapon. The current government is promoting the ideas of a great Hungary, which is very disturbing. When counting votes, Hungarians will also worry about it – added.
