TVN7 still without a license. “It would be a violation of the treaty between Poland and the USA”

The National Broadcasting Council has until February 25 to decide whether to extend TVN7’s license. If he declines to do so, the channel will not be available free of charge on aerial TV. The station issued a statement on this matter.

The TVN7 license expires on February 25, 2022. An application for its extension was submitted a year ago. The National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) has not yet issued a decision on this matter. The Council invokes doubts about the ownership structure of the television. TVN is formally managed by the Amsterdam-based Polish Television Holding, but is actually controlled by the American Discovery Group.

On February 1, the National Broadcasting Council held a vote on granting the license. The application failed with one vote. Now the owners of the station have released a statement saying that the channel’s Dutch broadcasting license does not solve the problem. “Broadcasting TVN7 as a free channel for all Polish terrestrial TV viewers is possible only on the basis of a license granted by the National Broadcasting Council,” the station’s authorities said.

“The application to the National Broadcasting Council to extend the license for TVN7 for another 10 years was submitted by TVN Grupa Discovery on December 23, 2020. Despite meeting all the requirements, no decision has been made to conclude the license. Under the applicable law, nothing justifies such a delay. of obtaining the Polish TVN license, Discovery Group will take all available legal steps to pursue claims in connection with the attitude of the National Broadcasting Council,” we read in the station’s statement.

“Failure to grant the TVN7 license would also violate the treaty on trade and economic relations between Poland and the United States. President Andrzej Duda, by announcing a veto against the Lex TVN Act, confirmed that the law must ensure the protection of acquired rights, including the rights to obtain a license by entities that have met certain conditions “- TVN authorities summarize their statement.
