TVN Foundation helps hospital in Nysa. “We collected almost 8 million zlotys”

TVN24 | 27 September 2024

The director already has a plan on how to make the hospital in Nysa accept patients again. The TVN Foundation will help implement it.

– This is a very important gesture for me, because this support from the TVN Foundation brings us much closer to launching our hospital as soon as possible, which is a priority for me today – says Artur Kamiński, director of the District Hospital in Nysa.

The president of the TVN Foundation came personally not only to see the scale of the destruction, but also to ensure that all the money from the charity collection, which began 10 days ago and is still ongoing, will be donated to the renovation of the District Hospital in Nysa and medical equipment. This is the largest district hospital in the Opole province.

– We have collected almost eight million zlotys during our charity collection. This is an incredible result, which is a success for us and our viewers – says Zuzanna Lewandowska, president of the TVN Foundation.

When the water started to enter the hospital in Nysa, there were over 100 patients in the facility. Firefighters and soldiers helped evacuate them. It was a dramatic fight for their lives and health. No one was hurt. – Everyone there rose to the challenge. I thank you very, very much for that – says the Minister of Health, Izabela Leszczyna.

Hospital losses exceed PLN 50 million

When the water receded, it didn’t matter whether they were paramedics, doctors, nurses or receptionists. They grabbed mops and brushes to save whatever they could. The residents of Nysa also helped.

– This is our second family – said Janina Rogalińska, a nurse, about the employees of the hospital in Nysa on September 20. – There are many emotions inside us, both good and bad, but now we have shown that we are a real team and we support each other – Agnieszka Jankowicz, a nurse, echoed her.

Unfortunately, not everything could be cleaned and repaired. The hospital director initially estimated the losses at over 50 million złoty.

– The TVN Foundation will finance the purchase of the most key elements without which the hospital cannot function – announces Zuzanna Lewandowska.

– We want to purchase a new stationary CT scanner with an entire laboratory, we want to purchase a new X-ray machine with an entire laboratory, we want to purchase a new ambulance – lists Artur Kamiński.

The list of needs is long. The element destroyed two tomographs and an MRI scanner, among other things. The hyperbaric chamber – the only one in the province – is also not working for now. – We will probably start the treatments again on October 7 – announces Mr. Bartłomiej, the operator of the hyperbaric chamber.

“This is a district hospital. It serves many cities”

– We are worried that so much equipment has been destroyed – says one of the residents of Nysa. – This is a district hospital. It serves many cities nearby from our commune as well – points out another resident.

If everything goes according to plan, the director expects that the hospital will admit its first patients in four weeks. Not where there is no access, but on the upper floors. Where the water did not get in.

– The worst is behind us and I don’t want to say that it’s all downhill, because it’s still uphill, but we have a strictly defined plan to open the hospital, and that’s what we’re focusing on very strongly today – says Artur Kamiński.

It is also crucial to reconstruct the flooded diagnostic laboratory. Jurek Owsiak’s foundation is coming to the rescue in this matter. – Thanks to the support of WOŚP, we have already rented one and it will be paid for by WOŚP. A mobile tomograph – says Artur Kamiński.

The Minister of Health claims that renovation is not enough. The hospital should be moved to a modern building. To a place where no flood will threaten it.

– I would really like to sit down with the authorities of the Opole province, probably in a broader context, but first of all with the mayor, and talk about a new hospital for Nysa – says Izabela Leszczyna.

– We will lobby very hard and hold the minister to her word, because this is a very important task and will certainly improve the health safety of all our residents – emphasizes Artur Kamiński.

These are plans for the future. For now, every penny counts to help rebuild what was destroyed. The charity collection is ongoing. Payments can be made to the account number provided on the TVN Foundation website or via text message or Blik.
